Literacy Volunteers

Purpose

Instill a love of reading in elementary school students.

Role for each volunteer

Listen to and support a student's reading once a week during the school year.

• We will match you with a student.
• You will read with the same student all year long.

Training

• There is a kick-off training for all volunteers.
• It is led by a literacy specialist.
• All volunteers also attend an orientation at their assigned school.

Materials and support

We provide:

• All books and materials.
• Reading resources.
• A  monthly e-newsletter with program updates and helpful tips.

Volunteer commitment

• Read with a student at their school for 20-30 minutes a week, November-May.
• Complete a background check once every three years.

Purpose

Help adults who are trying to improve their literacy skills.

Role for each volunteer

• Help adult learners (age 17 and older) with English language acquisition.
• Tutor students in reading, writing, math skills and GED subject areas.

Training and support

Literacy Minnesota provides training and support.

Time commitment

1-3 hours per week for six months.
